“Hi Nancy, a great book about Pete and the moon program. When the whole thing happened, I weas a school boy behind the iron courtain, but I clearly remenber the fisrt steps on the moon as seen on (forbidden) western TV four weeks before I was intoduced into school. Now I have the opportunity to read books like the one you and H. Klausner wrote about Pete and all those guys in the apollo program. Strange enough, you are all refer to the victims of the space race in the former Soviet Union, such thing would never ever happened to the amaerican astronauts in the former kommunistst system. The book was a pleasure to read and a gread reminder that we still need guys like Pete to do things like to go to the moon in the future. Many many thanks for this book about a real hero like Pete who envisioned the place to go for future NASA missions. ”

Pete Conrad

“Pete Conrad was my childhood hero, I remember staying home from school in 1969 to watch the second moon landing on TV.

Also, the fantastic repair he and Joe Kerwin and Paul Weitz did to Skylab in the summer of 1973.

Rocket Man is a great book and may I take this opportunity to say how much I enjoyed it.

Thanks Pete, you're a real hero.”

What A Flyer

“I was privileged to have dinner at Mr Conrad's house when they lived in Long Beach some years ago. He met me at the door, I had never met him before, and he welcomed me in very graciously. I told him right away, as I figured he got a lot of this, that I thought the astronauts were true heroes, doing what they did with what they had, fantastic flyers, and I was extremely proud to meet him. He pretty much brushed that off, as he did get a lot of it. I mentioned I had applied to Navy ROTC so that I would get my schooling funded and then train to fly. He turned to me, those blue eyes actually lit up and he said: "Did you fly?" I said, well, no, Stanford did not want me if I were to come as a ROTC student, and bla bla bla. Soon as I said that, the light went right out and he went back to being the gracious host. Flying was in his blood, all right. ”

Dcx Program

“I remember Pete very well and still have a few photos of him during my stay at WSMR working on the DCX program. Although myself and Jessy Reyes were there to make sure the site had power 24 hours a day Pete would always let us know we were part of the team. I still have imbedded in my brain his voice during flight test coming over the loud speakers while we all stood outside the flight trailer. What an amazing person. I still have the original "Remove Before Flight" flag that came off of the DCX prior to its first launch. Pete gave it to me while we walked the test area looking for potential flying objects during liftoff and landing. He would often talk about Arizona. Not sure the relation and it could be my growing older in years but I vividly remember that. Take care Pete... My thoughts and prayers go out to your family as well.

Pete Conrad's Book

“I read Nancy's book and I found it to be everything I had hoped. It only took me three tries to buy it and I even got stiffed by a guy on E-Bay that never sent it after payment.

I liked the book very much and found it to be very influencing. I have even decorated my home for Christmas in honor of Pete. All white lights and one bush with colored lights. "If you can't be good, be colorful".

I would love to contact Nancy in person and tell her how much I enjoyed the book. It read well and flowed right along. Too bad I couldn't not meet the man while he walk the Earth.”

—Paul “Pnf44” Friedrich Mechanic

“I was fascinated by Apollo as a kid, Apollo 12 and Pete caught my attention due to the sense of fun he seemed to live with, He inspired me to pursue my dream in avaition and I manged to fulfill my goals. Pete, amongst others has been an inspiration to me and as a tribute to a fellow aviator I would like to leave the following poem, I think it fits the man.

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there

I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,

I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, or even eagle flew -

And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod

The high untresspassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Pete I Miss Your Smile

“Pete, I will never forget the times we worked together on the DC-X program. Your laugh lit up a room and your sense of humor was unmatched by anyone. You kept me broke buying those darned pretzels you loved so much but I knew if I let the supply run low I'd hear from you. I was most fortunate to have had the opportunity to know you and your lovely wife Nancy. You were truly my hero and a person I looked up to and respected. God bless your family.”

—Joyce “Charles Chandler” Chandler Secretary

Pete

“Pete had just joined Hughes Helicopters when he called all the "Tech Reps" together. Pete introduced himself, gave a brief introduction on his new role responsibilities at Hughes. After the inital meeting he spoke with each one of us on an individual bases. He asked us basically what areas we worked in as far as countries, product lines we handled etc. When he approached me I noticed his height, he was very tall! Anyway I mentioned to Pete that I was a Navy SAR swimmer while on active duty. Because of his Naval background he immediately reached out and shook my hand and said "You Guys Did A Hell of a job". I only worked with Pete a short time. However I can say this: he was a genuine person for sure. I will never forget what he said to me that day! To this day when the opportunity strikes, I mention that one of my bosses walked on the moon! Mark D. Moore President MDM Capital, LLC”

“For all that Pete and the first three generations of astronauts did. Thanks also for this website, every day I live to the fullest and try hard to continue the RIGHT WAY to do things in this life.... Since no one else cares anymore, you and I need to do it. I love the book, learning all about Mr Pete, and all those who raise hell doing it right. ”

Thank You

“Pete Conrad is the man who inspired me. As I read of his antics he still does!!! He sounds like a larger than life character. It is Pete who made me start thinking about space exploration. I am now a student at Cambridge University studying areonautics and astronautics. My dream is to move to America and join NASA. After all, they are the leading space and aeronautics organization. Thank you Pete for everything you have done, not for me, but for all of mankind. I hope to push the barrior just as much as you did!!! My heart goes out to Nacy and the family.

—Hannah “Space Gal” Fewings Student

Pete Conrad

“Pete Conrad was a rare piece of alchemy! A smart, skilled engineer, test pilot and astronaught who managed to keep his rowdy spirit, common sense and sense of humor. Small in stature but larger than life! And as for his place among the ranks of men atop jets and rockets? In the words of my friend, Apollo and Pax river engineer Mack Martin.. "They couldn't even hold Pete's Jocky shorts!!" A true American who loved the simple things like fast cars, faster jets, loud bikes, a good joke and a shot of hooch. Here's to you Pete! A true American hero! ”

“La verdad que me hubiera encantado conocerte, pero la verdad que tengo solo 15 años y cuando tu pisabas la luna, yo era solo un projecto. Soy extremadamente fanatico del programa espacial, y mi meta es poder llegar a ser astronauta algun dia. Fuiste y seras un hombre excelente, lleno de experiencia y alegria. Gracias Rocket Man.”

Hero

“The definiton of a hero to me is someone who can do extraordinary things and yet make it so simple and plain.....when Apollo (Yankee cliper & Intrepid) aproached the moon...who was there???????who experienced it???..no it wasnt High level scholars..it wasnt Ba's///Ma's or dr's...it was you and I that head "Whoopeee!!!"It was the farmer (of earth)that heard....."right where its supposed to be"......It was childrem dreaming of stellar travel..filled with dreams and the promisses of adventure that heard Pete say Yippeee on the moon......so here we all are the plain...the uneducated that dreamed the same dream as he did......then we are elevated to a new plane when we hear that he let Allen fly a little on the way from the moon....What a guy....He is MY Hero!!!!”

Meeting A Hero

“I met Pete Conrad while I was working in Long Beach, CA. in the late 70's. I worked for a bank where Pete had some of his accounts. I made it a point to be introduced to him and from that time on, whenever he came into the bank I was sure to say hello. He always took time to talk to me. As an Air Force Vietnam veteran, Pete and I discussed our experiences of that time. I would have given anything to fly F4s with him. I was an enlisted airman, but Pete treated me as an equal. It was a great experience to talk about flying with one of the world's greatest pilots. I was just getting my private flying license. Pete was very generous with his advice. He treated me as a fellow flyer. He would come into the bank, look for me and say "...great day for flying.." with that big smile of his. He told me some interesting stories about Apollo 12 and about his philosophy of Space Travel. He made a great impression and I feel very lucky to have met such a great man. He was truly a space traveler and pioneer. I have an autographed photo of Pete standing on the moon. It is one of my prized possesions. Everytime someone asks me about the photo I tell them this story. Thanks Pete.”

Great Ride, Rocketman!

“I recall feeling stunned when I'd heard Pete Conrad had died. Even though I'd never met him, it felt like I'd lost a friend. Now that I've just finished "Rocketman," I feel that loss again. Even so, I'm awfully glad I had a chance to read about the real Pete Conrad rather than some manufactured PR creation.

We lost Pete Conrad too early. One of the good guys.

Nancy Conrad

“Hi, I was coming home from the MAYO CLINIC, Rochester, MN and heard a boardcast with Nancy speaking. “Like most kids who grew up at a time when we first began to fly to the Moon I fell in love with all of it. I dreamed of it, stowing away on a moonship.

I am lucky to have lived at the time it was possible. Yet at the time those dreams began I never would have thought I would have met one who made that journey.

I recieved a letter from Pete Conrad in the mid 90's. I never did know how he knew who I was or where I lived, but somehow he did. I was to talk with Mr. Conrad on the phone and hear his familiar voice. He was serious and he was funny and he was smart. I hung up the phone impressed by not only what he had been able to do but who he really was. I am honored that he took the time.

He was to surprise me one more time before he left this world once again for another. Leaving me to laugh again at one of his off the wall jokes.

Typical I'm sure to some. He started when I was a kid helping me to dream by the things he had done....and ended leaving me with a smile by being just who he was.

Thank you Pete.....I'll see you on the other side.”

Nancy Conrad's Book

“I just read Rocket Man myself. I like to concider myself a semi expert on the Apollo missions. Pete was always an intrigueing figure to me. After reading the book....Pete was truly "one-of-a-kind"! The feeling I got after reading the book was that Pete was like a lot of us. He was a "lunch-pail tote'ing Joe" who wanted to do better and get the job done. And to me he just seems like one of the characters who "made" NASA. I think these times NASA lacks those kinds of people and need some. If only we could have Pete back a little while longer. We miss you Pete!”

Inspired

“My father, Mike Johnson, who commented on the first page, knew you well, you two were friends. I got to meet you when I was younger but I was so young, I have no memory of our meeting, I do however have the photo you signed for me, your limited edition Space Hero Power Ranger Action Figure Set that you gave me, and all the stories i've been told of you and how great a man you were. You have inspired me to become an astronaut, I am currently in High School, and they say the people who first set foot on Mars are in High School today, and if I am one of those people, I will dedicate the flight to you, for you have inspired me to greater heights.”

Pete

“I have always believed that life is about fate. Pete Conrad was always going to die when he did, like us all when it happens it happens. However what a remarkable man. He packed more into his 69 years than some people would if they lived up a 1000 years.

Pete I hope one day we meet under soft black stars

I salute you sir ”

To A Hero And Friend

“In 1996 I was blessed to have met and come to know Mr. Conrad. I worked at an FBO that handled his aircraft and the services he and his charming wife requested. It was a joy to me, talking with someone who I watched fly into space four times, and yet remain so down to earth. Yes Mr. Conrad was one of twelve men to walk on the moon and in his own words "really super" it was, and have come to known that nice "little" old guy is something I will always cherish. And to you Mrs. Conrad, I'm truly sorry it's taken me so long to write this, God bless you.....And I miss him too.”

“Indy will miss you PETE! Pete, after being close friends for over 35 years, and attending many Indy 500 events together, it's with great pain and sadness to know that when the Indy cars roar past the first turn at the start of the race this next year, the first race of the new century, there will be a most notable silence high in the stands on turn one, a silence for the empty seat you will no longer fill in body, but we take comfort in knowing you'll be there in spirit! We will miss you old friend!...”

My Boyhood Hero!

“As I child I was in love with Apollo. What could be more exciting than rocketships to the moon!?

I didn't have sports stars for heroes, I idolized astronauts.

Pete Conrad was my hero! I saw him speak at NASA just before Skylab. I was 8 and shaking his hand and getting a photo together was a hilite of my young life.

Never look back, Pete! You are an example to all achievers that anything is possible!

You Are An Inspiration And A Hero

“As a child the astronauts of NASA were heroes to me. As an adult I've had the chance to read and learn more about my childhood heroes. The way Pete touched others and the way he approached life with such humor is an inspiration to me.

I recently attended the Centennial of flight banquet in Dayton. Many other astronauts were there. I remember thinking of Captain Conrad on that night wishing he was there also and Iím sure he was in his own way.

Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Godspeed Pete.”
