What Can One Say

“Words can not express what you did for the the world. Words can not express the shock and sorrow people are feeling at this time. I was looking forward to meeting you next May, now I never will but through what has been written I feel as though I have known you. My deepest condolences to your family and friends.”

—Ian Hepworth

Postponing Our Meeting...

“Pete, I was so looking forward to meeting both you, and the rest of your crew in November for the 30th anniversary of your Apollo XII mission.

Well, we'll just have to postpone that for a little while.

To your Wife and family go my deepest condolences Wherever you are, take very good care of yourself.”

—Jim Glen

We've Only To Look Up To Remember...

“Thank you, Mr. Conrad, for leading us--not mere-ly around the bend, or over the next hill, oreven "from sea to shining sea"--but into the bound-lessness of space itself!

We know it was your plea-sure, so heartfelt was your enthusiasm for the challenge of it. We're grateful that you made it ours.

We thank God for the gift of you to our country and your family, for sharing you with us.”

—Pat Sanders

Walk The Heavens

“He walk on Earth. He walk on the Moon. Now he walk's the Heaven's. God Speed Pete.”

—Paul Richardson Ve9vw

Salute

“Our short night flight was conversationless. He spoke one word, pointing out the window: "Venus", he said. No one who knew Pete Conrad will forget him. To Pete's family and lifelong friends, I salute an American pioneer, explorer, patriot, soft-hearted guy, independent spirit, adventurer, hilariously funny, seriously dedicated, competent and kind human being.”

—Mark R. Collins

Slipped The Surly Bonds Of Earth...

“God speed Pete Conrad. You were a man who no doubt packed the right stuff.

And, as you yourself might have joked, "Hey Neil! And you thought the LEM step to the moon was a big step?"

Touch the face of God sir; we'll all remember you. God bless and Whoopee!”

—Robert L. Mcmahon

Smooth Sailing, Skipper...

“Cap'n Pete; It just seems like yesterday that we listened to you and Al whistling and laughing on the moon. The two of you and Dick were one of the best crews we ever fielded.

And I can remember your daring rescue of the Skylab Orbital Workshop. When you cut the metal strip and the snubber broke, you said you went flying, "...ass over tea kettles." Not exactly Keats, but ALL Pete Conrad.

I can remember that Mike Collins once said that you should, "...play Pete Conrad in a Pete Conrad movie".

I stopped by the Astronaut Hall of Fame on my way to work at the Cape this morning and dropped off some flowers for you. All of us here are thinking of you tonight and not a few glasses have been raised in your name.

Thanks, Pete. Not only for your accomplishments for our country and for our space program, but for your good humor, your exuberance and your lesson to us all to live life large.

God Bless You, Skipper.

Blue skies and good tail winds.”

—Nick Thomas

So Long, Mr. Conrad...

“I never knew Pete in person, but I am sure he was great in person. He was kind, fun-loving, and brave. During the Apollo 12 launch (lightning strike) he never lost his cool and turned the "Abort" handle. He turned the mission into a big party for all three men, and he had the best time on the moon. I will really miss Pete, not having the chance to maybe one day meet him really saddens me. Godspeed, Pete. I know you are looking down over us all and having a great time where you are now!”

—David Holiman

So Long, Pete Conrad

“Thanks for everything.”

—Ali Hammoud

Thank-You, Mr. Conrad

“Thank-you Mr. Conrad for the excitement, thrill and comic relief you provided to a young teenager during the Apollo 12 mission. A instructor at school actually wrote your comment "That may have been a small step for Neil but it was a long one for me" quote on the black board the morning of your moon walk. My standards are high for hero recognition and you, sir, "fit the bill". My condolences to your family and a heartfelt "God Speed" to you in your new journey. Also to Alan, Gus, Ed, Roger, Deke and Jim; we are very proud of you all.”

—Ed Mcginty

Ever Onwards

“I have spent the last eight months editing a series of books on Apollo. When Pete saw the first one (Apollo 8) he said, "So where's 12?" The answer Pete, is that it's gonna get done - now more so than ever. I had hoped to work with you and now I am left to wonder what it might have been like to just meet you. I feel as though I have lost a close friend. You inspired me and, more than any other pioneer astronaut, you made ordinary people believe they have a future in space. God speed Pete.”

—Robert Godwin

Thanks Pete

“Thanks Captain Conrad for all that you have done for the USA & humanity. You will always be honored & remembered. God bless & enjoy the ride...”

—Bob Mcclimon

That's All There Is

“I was shocked at the unexpected news about Pete Conrad;all I could think to do as a memorial, was to have friends over to watch the episode from the HBO series about the Apollo 12 mission, which is the title of this e-mail. I am a child of the '60s, who grew up in awe of the men in the space program, who mourns the passing of each one who has been brave enough to risk everything to try to push back the frontiers of human knowledge.”

—James P. Mcduffie

The Best Of The Best, My Hero

“Pete Conrad was my hero. He took life with great humor and heroism. His story of grabbing ahold of skylab and pulling with so many thousand pounds of command module was so inspiring; you could feel yourself there. Of all the astronauts, he was my favorite. He kept the dream alive and I WANTED him to return to the moon. Why do all the good ones go so soon? First John Holloman of CNN, and now Pete. May this loss inspire our nation to return to our glory days of great deeds on the shoulders of giants like this. To Pete's family I know you will miss this great and funny and talented man with such love for life and great vision. I am so very sorry. The first thing I did when I found out was go to Amazon.com to find his memoirs, but alas there were none. If anyone can share stories, articles, or anecdotes, it would be appreciated. Godspeed, Mr. Pioneer, look down on us and ask God to move us forward back into greatness. Man not robots need to do great deeds again, to inspire us and our children, and grow into our destiny.”

—Greg Dinardi Former Nasa Hq

You Are Go For Tli

“I was shocked to hear of Pete's death, but it isn't surprising that it comes while he was out having fun, living life. Pete wasn't going to drop dead from a walker of a massive coronary. He was my favorite of the "New Nine" and always had fun in whatever he did. Via Condios, Amigo, and say hello to Jose', Deke, Gus, Ed, Roger, Donn, Jack, Stu, Jim, Ron and all the rest for me. May you always set SCE to AUX...”

—Mark Herring

From The Earth To The Moon

“Dear Mrs. Conrad, My son Jesse has made all of us here at home take a second look at the Space Program and of all the fantastic adventures of the Moon Landings. My husband and I again are living the experiences we had as children.

We were deeply sadden by the death of a great astronaut. May you and your family find peace and strength in knowing that Pete Conrad did things that we only dream about, and lived a full life. "Que Dios lo tenga en la Gloria"”

—Ileana Teresa And Jesse Varas

The Color Of The Moon

“The moon tonight is in shades of gray, the same drab grays it has always been. Well, always excpet for a few days in November of 1969, when Pete Conrad was on it.

Pete Conrad brought color to everything. he was not only a great man, but a interesting one - an all too rare combination. His passing is all our loss”

—Daniel Waltimire

God Speed

“God Speed to a real hero!!”

—Wes Renzas Jr.

But now it is too late, his death have arrived! His gemini, and Apollo friends will surely miss him! God Speed, Pete, God Speed

“High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

(Killed in a mid-air collision in 1941 shortly after having written this poem.)

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue. I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod. The high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”

—Tom Mckeever

Godspeed Sir

“To the family. I was 9 years old when he walked on the moon. He and the other lunar astronauts were my inspiration and remain so to this day. It is our sacred duty to pick up and carry forward the fallen standard.

God bless all the Apollo astronauts!”

—Dennis Wingo Ceo Skycorp Incorporated

To A Brave Warrior

“I never got to meet Pete, but I was sure looking forward to it. I always guessed right when I heard the continuous laughter in my friend Mark's office that he must have been talking to Pete. He will be missed around here.

Cheers to a life filled with the spirit of adventure and hope for all mankind.”

—John Lytle Pete's Webmaster Jl Productions

What I Have To Say

“I'm sure I speak for everybody when I say the Conrad family will be in our hearts and prayers.”

—David Berglund

All The Difference

“In 1990 Pete gave the keynote address at the International Space Conference in Japan. Quoting from his remarks: As I reflect on my involvement with the space program I am reminded of a poem by Robert Frost: Two roads diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less traveled by.”

—Curtis Roos

Se Te Quiere.

“Pete, aunque no tuve la dicha de conocerte, por lo que he leido de ti, siento como si hubiese compartido muchas aventuras contigo. Eres alegria. Eres un heroe.”

—Eugenio Rios
